Enable HealthViewer in eClinicalWorks
A patient of your practice wants to use HealthViewer, a personal health record app, to keep a copy of their lab results. eClinicalWorks requires each practice to turn on patient apps before patients can connect them. This page is for the practice’s eClinicalWorks administrator.
What HealthViewer does
Section titled “What HealthViewer does”- Uses the ONC-certified patient-access FHIR API. The patient signs in with their own healow portal account and approves access.
- Reads the patient’s own records only. It never writes to your system and can’t see other patients.
- Stores data only on the patient’s own computer, encrypted. HealthViewer has no servers that receive patient data.
Under the 21st Century Cures Act, patients have the right to access their records with an app of their choosing.
- In eClinicalWorks, go to Admin → Product Activation.
- Find FHIR APIs and click Activate. If the button says Settings, it’s already active.
- Open FHIR APIs → Settings and confirm the patient-centric apps tile shows a green checkmark, then click Setup.
- If your system lists patient apps individually, find and enable HealthViewer.
Menu names can differ between eClinicalWorks versions. If you can’t find these options, eClinicalWorks support can point you to patient-app (FHIR API) activation for your version.
After you enable it
Section titled “After you enable it”Let the patient know. They can reconnect from Import → Connect Health System in HealthViewer. If they still see “FHIR app authentication is not enabled,” the setting hasn’t taken effect yet.
